The New Los Yébenes Wastewater Treatment Plant Enters Its Final Phase

The new Los Yébenes Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is on the verge of becoming operational. With construction nearing 90% completion, the facility has recently hosted an official site visit, confirming the project’s progress and setting the stage for technical testing scheduled to begin in August.

Eiffage Energía Sistemas, operating as part of a joint venture with Eiffage Construcción and Entorno Obras y Servicios S.L., has carried out the comprehensive overhaul of the existing treatment plant.

A Broad Technical Scope

Commissioned by Infraestructuras del Agua de Castilla-La Mancha, the project addresses a long-standing environmental challenge facing this municipality in the province of Toledo: the obsolescence of its old treatment plant, which was no longer capable of accommodating urban growth or meeting current wastewater treatment regulations.

Representing an investment of over €4 million, the new WWTP has been designed to treat the wastewater generated by a population equivalent of 16,000 inhabitants.

The new WWTP features a low-load extended aeration activated sludge system based on Carrousel-type oxidation ditch technology  (Carrousel system) —a solution that optimizes the purification process with high efficiency and lower environmental impact.

The scope of the project extends beyond the treatment plant itself: it encompasses the construction of the influent collector and the effluent outfall pipe, site preparation, the execution of the water and sludge lines, as well as bypass systems, piping networks, instrumentation, and auxiliary facilities, alongside the complete electrical, automation, and civil engineering infrastructure.

A Cross-Disciplinary Project

Eiffage Energía Sistemas is contributing technical expertise on multiple fronts for this project.

The undertaking reflects precise technical coordination among several specialized teams. The Mechanical Installations department, led by Rodrigo Álvarez Polo, has integrated the electrical and hydraulic works; the Networks team, headed by José Joaquín Prieto, has executed the high-voltage line and transformer substation; meanwhile, Sustainable Installations, directed by Miguel Ángel Aparicio, has outfitted the plant with a rooftop photovoltaic system that will enable it to generate a portion of its own energy consumption.

The future Los Yébenes WWTP will bring about a significant improvement in environmental quality, foster the conservation of water resources, and contribute to the well-being of the local population.

It represents a strategic initiative that reaffirms the Eiffage Group‘s commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and efficient water management.
