Eiffage Energía Sistemas: at the forefront of sustainable and aesthetically pleasing heritage lighting

Ornamental lighting has become a cornerstone in transforming urban landscapes and elevating architectural heritage. Against this backdrop, Eiffage Energía Sistemas continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainable, efficient, and innovative lighting solutions, as reported in the article published by Smartlighting magazine.

The industry publication explores how Eiffage Energía Sistemas integrates this philosophy into its bespoke ornamental lighting projects.

Through these tailor-made solutions, the article illustrates how combining technology, design, and sustainability enhances iconic buildings and urban spaces—enriching the visual experience while reinforcing the unique identity of each environment.

In line with this approach, the Group has unveiled several projects designed to highlight the visual identity of public spaces and landmarks through creative, energy-efficient proposals.

Albacete Cathedral Lighting

Last March, Albacete Cathedral was the setting for a historic moment for the city: the unveiling of its new exterior decorative lighting. This initiative was made possible thanks to an agreement between Albacete City Council, the Diocese and the Iberdrola Spain Foundation.

Eiffage Energía Sistemas has led the implementation of the project, drawing on its extensive experience in energy and technology solutions.

The project to upgrade the cathedral’s decorative lighting has involved replacing the existing fixtures with new LED-based systems. Thanks to this modernisation, energy consumption is expected to fall by approximately 63%, according to the projections set out in the project. In addition to energy savings, this solution offers other benefits, such as more uniform and stable lighting, the ability to adjust light intensity, and a significant reduction in maintenance work.

The project has been developed with a focus on harmonising with the architecture and preserving the building’s identity. The lighting design aims to subtly highlight its main formal and volumetric features through targeted and balanced lighting. This enhances the building’s appearance at night, strengthening its integration into the urban environment and reinforcing its significance as a visual landmark in the centre of Albacete.

All the teams involved gave their all to complete the project within an exceptionally short timeframe. Thanks to this collaborative effort, Albacete Cathedral now boasts spectacular lighting that enhances its presence in the urban landscape, highlights its historical and symbolic significance, and pays tribute to the city’s patron saint, the Virgin of Los Llanos.

VALENCIA BULLFIGHTING ARENA

The Valencia Bullring  is a landmark historical and cultural venue in the city. The Valencia Provincial Council (Diputación de Valencia) has entrusted Eiffage Energía Sistemas with modernising its facilities to improve the arena’s efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The scope of work includes a complete overhaul of both interior and exterior lighting using cutting-edge LED technology. Additionally, a bespoke dimming and control system was implemented for the arena lights, allowing illumination levels to be tailored to specific operational requirements.

Crucially, a fire protection system was also installed—a priority intervention following a recent fire recorded in the NAIA 2 zone. The works encompassed the reconstruction of the roof affected by the incident, thereby reinforcing both the safety and overall structural integrity of the facility.

Thanks to the modernisation of the lighting and the improvement of its facilities, the venue will offer greater guarantees of safety, comfort and efficiency for both the public and the staff who work there.

Bank of Spain

Driven by its commitment to energy efficiency and infrastructure modernisation, Eiffage Energía Sistemas—operating through its new subsidiary SGAC, which includes the commercial brand SGA Solutions—has successfully programmed and commissioned the lighting systems across several Bank of Spain buildings.

A key component of this project involved migrating an obsolete SCADA system to a new platform, ensuring more efficient, precise, and centralised management across all floors.

When applied to connected lighting, SCADA systems enable efficient, automated management and monitoring by integrating LED luminaires. This integration delivers an adaptive, fully monitored, and energy-efficient lighting network.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Eiffage Energía Sistemas was recently awarded the contract for a comprehensive lighting overhaul within the workspaces of the Royal Palace of Madrid, the headquarters of the central services for Patrimonio Nacional (National Heritage). With the project now in its final stages, these upgrades will significantly enhance energy efficiency and improve working conditions.

Many of the rooms used as offices and workshops previously relied on outdated installations that failed to meet the minimum lighting standards required for daily operations. The project involves replacing existing equipment with state-of-the-art LED luminaires equipped with intelligent control and regulation systems. This will optimise energy consumption while ensuring an appropriate working environment.

This initiative forms part of a broader energy efficiency improvement plan targeting lighting installations across various palaces and historic buildings managed by Patrimonio Nacional.

Future projects

Eiffage Energía Sistemas remains deeply committed to projects where ornamental lighting takes centre stage. A testament to this is the recent contract win for the comprehensive renewal of the ornamental lighting at the Almadén Bullring, an officially designated Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural).

The planned interventions include a complete revamp of the existing installation using high-efficiency LED technology, yielding a significant reduction in energy consumption alongside a marked improvement in lighting uniformity, visual comfort, and electrical safety. Furthermore, an intelligent DMX control system will be integrated, allowing the lighting to adapt seamlessly to different uses and events.

This intervention not only optimises energy efficiency but also revitalises the architectural and cultural heritage of the site, preparing it for new tourist and cultural initiatives while preserving its historical essence.

As cities transition toward smarter, more sustainable, and efficient models, ornamental lighting cements its role as a vital tool for transforming and revitalising urban environments. Beyond its aesthetic function, these solutions celebrate architectural heritage, enhance the civic experience, and actively contribute to reducing environmental impact.

Through innovative projects such as these, Eiffage Energía Sistemas reaffirms its dedication to developing sustainable infrastructure that seamlessly blends technology, energy efficiency, and design.
