Yesterday, 27 May, Iberdrola held the inauguration ceremony for Spain’s largest energy storage battery at the Campo Arañuelo solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Cáceres. Eiffage Energía Sistemas was responsible for hybridising the facility.
Daniel Garrido, International and Renewable Energy Director at Eiffage Energía Sistemas, attended the ceremony as project lead. This milestone consolidates the firm’s position as a leader in comprehensive, utility-scale BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) solutions in Spain.
Hybridisation at the Campo Arañuelo I and II Solar Photovoltaic Plants
The Campo Arañuelo solar PV plants, built by Eiffage Energía Sistemas between 2022 and 2023, have been upgraded to incorporate LFP (lithium iron phosphate) storage systems with a total capacity of 60 MW / 120 MWh.
The project involved installing ten power stations, forty battery containers, executing civil engineering works, and fully integrating the PPC BESS and PPC Hybrid control systems.
This initiative marks the fourth BESS hybridisation project developed to date for Iberdrola, reinforcing both companies’ leadership in innovation and energy storage:
- Campo Arañuelo I and II (Cáceres)
- Andévalo (Huelva)
- Romeral (Cuenca)
PSFV Andévalo
Eiffage Energía Sistemas hybridised the original photovoltaic plant using an LFP battery system, integrating five power stations and twenty BYD battery containers.
The scope of work included civil works, electrical and mechanical installation, medium-voltage lines, substation refurbishment, and the expansion of the SCADA system. This makes it one of the first utility-scale storage projects implemented commercially in Spain.
PSFV Romeral
At the Romeral plant in Cuenca, the company installed a 30 MW / 60 MWh storage system using BYD technology and JEMA power stations.
In addition to civil works and electrical installation, the project encompassed transmission lines, substation refurbishment, and the expansion of the existing SCADA system.
Through these projects, Eiffage Energía Sistemas reinforces its commitment to technological innovation and sustainability, driving forward infrastructure that integrates renewable generation and energy storage for a more efficient, flexible, and decarbonised grid.
This line of action consolidates Eiffage Energía Sistemas’ role as a strategic partner to Iberdrola and as a national leader in turnkey EPC projects within the renewable energy and energy storage sectors.
